Current psychoanalytic thought overemphasizes the interpretation of transference at the expense of proper attention to the non-transferential, or real, relationship between analyst and patient. The authors feel that the analyst must recognize and deal with the real relationship in order to facilitate full development
and resolution of the transference neurosis. Analyzability involves the capacity for this transference-free relationship; otherwise a period of preparatory psychotherapy is necessary. The basic thrust of the paper is that humanness is not incompatible with good analytic technique and is, in fact, a most essential part of being a good analyst.
