Successful jokes provide an acceptable way of relieving tensions that build up from forbidden sexual and aggressive drives. Jokes are passed by work of mouth (with phenomenal speed) in cycles. The author explains the current cycle of elephant jokes as dealing with the anxiety aroused by the increase in size and power of the Negro, combined with a wish to belittle and destroy him by those who feel threatened. This dual trend is reflected in the two different types of elephant jokes.
