This well-written paper is a summary of a great deal of experience and deserves a better title because of its implications about psychoanalytic training. If an analysis is conducted by an analyst who avoids his own sense of impotence, it may be that preoedipal problems such as a feeling of emptiness are overlooked or explained with Oedipal interpretations. If this happens, the patient does not go through a complete educative experience. The patient's unresolved experiences of impotence and rage lead to a re-enforcing of ambition, competition, and aggrandizement without humanization and love.
