The author believes that the Oedipus complex in males has three successive phases. The first is the mother-phase, with separation from the father; second is the father-phase, with paternal ego and superego identifications; and third is the trinity-phase with reunion of the three. Santiago designates this last phase as the Ulysses complex and seeks to illustrate its dynamics with Homer's Odyssey, Joyce's Ulysses, and Joyce's life experience, as well as with the case of an adoles cent boy he treated.
