A common subject in Shakespeare's plays is the 'retentive father' who plods 'his dilatory way'. Love's Labour's Lost, The Tempest, Pericles, and other plays have fathers who attempt to keep their daughters. Baptista's insistence that Katharina marry before Bianca in The Taming of the Shrew masks his Oedipal attachment to his daughters and his wish to keep them both to himself.
