The 'world picture of Indian culture' is presented, with an outline of the main categories of Indian meditation practices, and is contrasted with that of Western culture, represented here by the concepts of psychoanalytic metapsychology. The psychoanalytic theory of ontogeny (and therapy) defines the erection of ego boundaries and the distinction
between self and nonself as developmental goals. In the Indian view of the world, these distinctions constitute a world of illusion. The goal of meditative liberation is to overcome these distinctions in favor of the 'true reality'—a complete identification of self and nonself.
