The author claims that Dora had not successfully integrated her anal-sadistic impulses. This developmental failure involving representations linked to the anal phase made aggression a source of anxiety for Dora, against which she had no recourse except flight or repression. The conflict concerned the attempt to gain mastery of an object and to acquire autonomy with respect to the object. Ville examines Freud's text for several examples to support this thesis. She emphasizes passages in the Dora case which link the sexual and the excremental in hysteria and suggests that Dora had probably identified with her obsessional mother in the attempt for anal mastery of the object of Oedipal rivalry.
