Chediak focuses on the delusional relationship between the patient and her body in describing the symptom complex of anorexia nervosa. The rapprochement crisis with its struggle surrounding separation-individuation could lead to the psychopathology of anorexia nervosa. Failure to resolve conflicts over control of the symbiotic mother leads patients to try to control all human needs by controlling hunger. In the treatment of anorexia nervosa it is fundamental to recognize the regressive re-enactment of the separation-individuation crisis during adolescence, with the patient's fear and sense of helplessness vis-à-vis the intensity of the drives. Wishes for fusion with the mother promote distortions of body image and fear of self-dissolution. The physiological dysfunctions are unavoidable consequences of the primary psychological disorder.
