Stockholder treats A Country Doctor as if it were the dream of the narrator. After acknowledging that the conscious elaboration involved in a work of fiction and the absence of a dreamer constitute important differences from an actual dream analysis, she goes on to elucidate themes of failed heterosexuality and acceptance of castration. Her discussion of the methodological issues and her analysis of the story's content are incisive and convincing.
