Using rich clinical material, the author demonstrates the multiple unconscious meanings of contact lenses: 1) the eye may stand for "I"; 2) contact lenses lend
themselves to double meanings—for instance, "contact" may serve the function of a bridge, i.e., sexual contact; 3) by virtue of the proximity and shaping of the lens to the eye, a symbolic symbiosis is established, and different aspects of an incomplete differentiation of self and object are manifested; and 4) contact lenses may be associated with defloration.
