Suggestion is defined as the deliberate induction of emotional processes in the patient by the therapist. Transference reactions, which are not deliberately induced, are therefore not suggestions. Psychoanalytic therapies are distinguished by the fact that they do not include suggestion as a technique. Covert suggestions by the therapist will impede a psychoanalytic resolution of the transference.
