Dorpat's paper is criticized on the basis that his clinical material indicates a mirror transference, rather than an idealizing transference. The analyst is a self-object, rather than a real one, and imitation of his perceived characteristics may constitute revival of an archaic, grandiose relationship for wishful purposes.
