The treatment of a latency age boy with enuresis, tic, and behavioral problems is presented. The therapist unhesitatingly supplied the paternal functions he felt had been missing in the boy's own father, including advice, encouragement, and intervention with the mother. From the first hour, dream interpretation was the major vehicle by which anxieties and conflicts were identified and discussed. The author views the therapeutic success of the treatment as due to a psychoanalytic process. The assumption is made that the issues which came to light had previously been unconscious, despite their ready availability. The possible defensive function of exclusive focus on dreams is not considered.
