Voth's treatment is reviewed with the suggestion that it was a corrective emotional experience, rather than an analysis. In particular, benign and reassuring submission to the analyst was disguised as an examination of positive oedipal themes. The patient's conscious concerns are likely to have been complex compromise formations rather than rapidly emerging unconscious fantasies. The boy's dreams were approached by a dictionary translation method instead of through the interpretation of resistances.
