Downey explores the links between Winnicott's concept of transitional areas and Freud's (1924) view on the discovery of the object in the external world. Both concepts suggest permanent residuals in reality testing. This paper is based on adolescent analysis and the patient's "transitional" attitudes toward food, clothing, and setting as calibration of oedipal and preoedipal levels and transference. Two cases are presented.
