The author presents a detailed précis of transitional phenomena in an attempt to explicate theoretical issues, definitions, and investigatory perspectives. He suggests that there is a clear division between transitional objects and transitional phenomena as well as between primary and secondary categories of objects. From this, a schedule and gradient matrix is derived, potentially capable of accommodating ethological and sociological observations—as well as more familiar developmental ones.
