Typical personality traits, psychodynamics, and environmental influences are described in eight child-abusing fathers. Paternal child abuse is usually accompanied by simrultaneous abuse of the spouse and excessive drinking. A history of maternal deprivation and unresolved dependency on the spouse are key psychodynamic issues shared by this population. Based on the data presented, a rationale for psychiatric intervention and treatment of child-abusing fathers is suggested.
