The author shows the untenability of the simple assumption that poetic fiction is determined by the male or female author's sex-specific daydreams. Rather, these life-historical, emerging wishes are elaborated and refracted in the mediating opus-fantasy which directs the creative process and which is itself largely determined by literary models and by the imagined potential reader. The opus-fantasy mediates between personal suffering or happiness and the literary tradition and social norms.
