Patients at a university outpatient clinic who suffered from impotence or premature ejaculation and who met certain selection criteria were referred for psychoanalytically oriented short-term psychotherapy with a maximum of twenty-four sessions. Their disturbance was conceptualized as a mode of self-representation based on specific identifications. The authors present a case history in which they compare the special characteristics of this treatment with those of psychoanalysis or focal therapy.
