During the years 1976 and 1977, one hundred twenty cases were presented and discussed in the context of psychoanalytic supervision at the Pro Familia center in Frankfurt. Behind inadequate contraceptive practices of the pregnant women who wish to terminate their pregnancies and long delays before applying to the counseling center, one can discover conflicts with their partners and intrapsychic conflicts between the unconscious wish for a child and oedipal guilt feelings. The imposed advice deprives the pregnant woman of the opportunity to realize her own ambivalence and to make a decision on her own. Instead she is obliged to delegate the resolution of her conflict to an external (superego) agency which may ally itself with her unconscious wish against the ego.
