Grimm's fairy tales may be read as a prescientific psychology of development. They can be seen as models of crisis and conflict solution marking the path from symbiosis to ambivalence to detachment, from boy to man, and from girl to woman and mother. The appeal of fairy tales lies in their imaginative exploration of life-historical risks and possibilities.
