Joan Fleming died August 10, 1980, ending a long and distinguished psychoanalytic career. She was a highly skilled clinician, a superb administrator, and a dedicated and tireless contributor to the scientific and educational activities of the American Psychoanalytic Association.
Dr. Fleming obtained an A.B. from Wellesley College in 1924 and a master's in physiology from Oberlin College in 1928. She taught physical education and physiology prior to entering medical school at the University of Chicago (M.D., 1936). Internship and psychiatric residency were at the University of Chicago. In 1943 she was certified in psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. She completed psychoanalytic training at the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis (1941-1945). She was a member of the staff of the Psychiatric and Psychosomatic Institute, Michael Reese Hospital (1951-1960), as well as being affiliated with a number of other facilities in Chicago.
Dr. Fleming, a member of the faculty of the Chicago Institute for two decades, was appointed a training and supervisory analyst in 1952. As Dean of Education (1952-1969), she led and inspired the educational experiences of a continuing line of psychoanalytic candidates. Throughout her career, she also maintained an active interest in the teaching of psychoanalytic principles to those in allied mental health disciplines, particularly social workers.
In 1969 she moved to Denver to become Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and to join the faculty of the Denver Psychoanalytic Institute. The impact of her extensive clinical and educational experience on the development of the newly organized Institute cannot be overestimated. At
