When plans for this Jubilee Issue were instituted, Dr. Arlow had just retired as Editor-in-Chief of the Quarterly. To all concerned, it seemed both inevitable and proper under the circumstances that the issue be dedicated to him and include a tribute that would serve to express admiration for his abilities and his accomplishments, gratitude for his devoted labors on behalf of the Quarterly as its Editor, and affection for the charming, cheerful, considerate companion of eight years of work together.
Professional journals are sometimes edited by a distinguished contributor to the literature of the field, sometimes by one whose own contributions are negligible. An argument for the first is that an authority in a field can most easily recognize excellence in others and most successfully solicit their contributions to the publication of which he or she is editor. An argument for the second is that such a one has more time and energy available for the demanding task of editing a journal than does the editor who is distracted from it by scholarly, investigative, and educational tasks apart from work on the journal itself. In fact, excellent editors can be found in both camps, as the history of the Quarterly itself attests.
Of the two, Dr. Arlow clearly belongs in the first. He is an outstanding example of a superb editor who has himself made great contributions to his chosen field. His contributions began long before he assumed his post as Editor, they continued during his term of office, and he continues to produce them with the excellence and frequency which he has accustomed us to expect from him. How Dr. Arlow is able to do so much and to do it all so well is something which constantly astonishes all who know him.
