Bergeret is critical of studies which are too physiological to indicate much about the affective content of orgasm. Orgasm as a subject for psychoanalysis is different from the coital activity studied by physiologists. He concludes that common to both frigidity and impotence are conflicts in the fantasy experience involved at many complex levels of psychic functioning. Most studies deal with the affective experience around object relations, leading to a too exclusive consideration of the object; other studies tend to be more specifically limited to dynamic factors of instinctual origin without giving enough attention to the topographical and economic aspects of object relations. One may better evaluate orgasm by attending to the fantasies involved, for these fantasies are elaborated from very diverse instinctual and object-relational levels.
