Chambon emphasizes the importance of pregenital and oedipal fantasies which underlie frigidity. He presents case histories in which the multiple fantasies associated with difficulties in orgastic response are detailed. The qualities of orgasm can be explained from an economic point of view in terms of proportionality and equilibrium of cathexes and countercathexes of unconscious fantasy representations. He discusses some symbolic equivalents of orgasm and finds such activities as fishing and card playing, in which there is a crescendo and a decrescendo of struggle, as containing an unconscious equation with orgastic experience.
