Noy presents a theory of cognitive development that is based on four assumptions: (1) every cognitive function operates according to two different organizational
modes: one derived from the rules of the primary process, the other from the secondary process; (2) normal development of the cognitive functions requires that both primary and secondary processes reach optimal levels of development; (3) mature cognitive functioning in any area requires a sound balance between primary and secondary processes; (4) the organizational modes of primary and secondary processes reflect the two main forms of adaptation, the autoplastic and the alloplastic.
