This is a fascinating and moving account of the analysis of a woman in her late twenties whose father had a stroke when she was nine, after which he became bedridden and deteriorated. He finally died during the middle of the patient's analysis. From the clinical material the author convincingly demonstrates how the analyst, through the transference, became a substitute object through whom the previously impeded mourning became possible.
