The author of this well-written paper, after exploring the origins of the concept of screen memories, traces its evolution in the analytic literature. This involves a further understanding of the various ways in which screen memories, including traumatic memories, may serve as resistances. Thus the author arrives at a more comprehensive definition of screen memories. Finally, he presents some instructive case material from a psychoanalysis, demonstrating how screen memories can be acted out in the service of the transference resistance and how it is then necessary, at the appropriate time, to interpret the screen memory directly into the transference as wish or as defense.
