In this 1962 paper, Max Deutscher (1916-1979), to whom this entire issue is dedicated, attempts to outline the development of a man's sense of fatherhood during the course of his wife's pregnancy. It is complementary to the woman's regressive identifications with her mother in a search for her motherliness. It "is the man's search for the personifications in his history for his own fatherliness." Two cases are presented, and Deutscher concludes by stating that in the man a particular shift must occur whereby the infantile and narcissistic elements are transformed into a healthy paternal love after the birth of the child.
