The authors argue that screen memories undergo transformation in psychoanalysis and that the analysand's sense of this change, near analytic termination, is an index of structural change. Freud believed screen memory is related to repressed memories of childhood guilt, as the highly condensed manifest content of a dream is to the latent dream thoughts. Four clinical cases illustrate the author's thesis that the transference neurosis can function as if it were a newly created screen memory. As the transference neurosis is analyzed, the meaning of the screen memory becomes altered and decathected.
