Gavshon offers a clear and convincing account of the treatment of a child whose parents were divorced and thereafter appeared at times to want him and at others to reject him for new partners. The child, nine and one half when his analysis began, was unusually articulate, able to express his feelings and examine their origins and meanings. We can learn much of great practical value from his treatment. For example, he overcame a school difficulty with adding decimals when it was suggested to him that the trouble was related to his inability to know where he was (he moved back and forth between his parents) or whom he was going to lose.
In her conclusion, however, Gavshon seems to offer insights not fully supported by the material she has presented. Her paper is nevertheless a well-written and instructive account.
