Yorke and his colleagues, some of whom treated patients referred to in the paper, offer a thorough review of shame: its distinction from guilt, its sources, and its defensive value. There is an interesting discussion of various characteristics of shame, its relation to other feelings, and its relation to superego and sense of self. Much
attention is paid to how shame develops, its relation to developmental phases, to the insides and outsides of the body, to sphincter control. Shamelessness is considered. Besides its presentation of some thoroughly developed ideas, the paper seems likely to stimulate new investigations into aspects of shame.
