Schmukler offers a fine account of the six-year-long analysis of a boy, starting when he was ten. At first he had obsessive-compulsive symptoms and made great progress in dropping them and becoming mature, ready to become an adult. Her discussion of the case is brief. One might have been glad of more, but both patient and therapist were so articulate that what is going on is quite clear, a virtue not always found in case presentations. This case teaches us important facts about obsessional behavior as well as about the ambivalence, anxieties, and progressions in transference found in termination with an adolescent.
