Waugaman uses brief examples from his practice and from the literature to show how the temporal aspects of the treatment setting may reactivate the impact of childhood events. In some of the vignettes, feelings associated with separation, loss, or rivalry emerged when the duration of the treatment matched the patient's age at the time of the birth of a sibling. Some patients experience fantasies and feelings associated with birth in the ninth month of treatment. Some patients experience the therapists's schedule of patients as reflecting birth order. Reactions to beginning treatment or to termination may reveal fantasies of birth or death. "Anniversary reactions" are a further example of the phenomena Waugaman considers. He speculates on the development of time sense, emphasizing the role of separation experiences within the symbiotic dyad.
