The author gives clinical examples of gender-specific vulnerabilities that female analysts must confront in treating female patients. There is a tendency to identify with the strivings of women and failure to analyze their defensive aspects. According to Bernstein, there is a danger in overidentifying with complaints against men, and of overvaluing professional career strivings, while devaluing more traditional feminine strivings. Female analysts may have difficulty realizing when a woman analysand sees the analyst as masculine. A countertransference issue of competition can occur, involving direct rivalry with the patient, or rivalry with the patient's mother. The analyst may allow a regressed mother-daughter transference to continue without analyzing it.
