The narcissistic dynamics in marriage are examined from intrapsychic and interpersonal perspectives. Behavior in a spouse can be viewed not only as internally motivated, but as "a response to pressure to conform to the other spouse's inner object relations." The interpersonal viewpoint can illuminate where the intrapsychic cannot. Maltas details three narcissistic marriage styles: 1) a marriage uniting the autonomous and the dependent selves; 2) a marriage uniting the grandiose and devalued selves; and 3) a marriage uniting the indulged and deprived selves.
