The author conducted empirical sociopsychological studies on prejudices in connection with AIDS, and made inquiries into attitudes displayed by German and Russian students. Referring also to the results of opinion polls on xenophobia, racism, and nationalism, Richter demonstrates that reconciliation with one- self and others is proportional to the propensity for self-criticism and the ability
to recognize and acknowledge personal guilt. In contrast, where self-hatred and self-devaluation prevail, the tendency toward projection and hatred of others will also be dominant.
