2022 was a year in which The Psychoanalytic Quarterly lost several important members of our community.
Three editorial board members passed away this year; I will give a few words about each of them.
Leon Balter, a longstanding member of our editorial board, died on April 14 at age 86 from organ failure. Leon, a training and supervising analyst at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute, was an eminent scholar in diverse areas who published papers on psychoanalytic theory, artwork, and film. He was particularly highly esteemed for his teaching at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where he introduced generations of residents to Freud, at Mt. Sinai and NYPSI, winning accolades from several institutions for his instruction. Generous with his time and attention, he will be remembered as a brilliant interlocutor by colleagues and those whom he taught.
Antoine Corel, a member of the Quarterly’s Editorial Board from 2016-2020, died on July 14 at age 87. Antoine began his career in Argentina as a film critic writing weekly film reviews—an interest that he continued with his psychoanalytic essays on film. He had his analytic training in Argentina, becoming a member of Asociación Psicoanalítica Argentina. In 1976, together with his wife Haydee Faimberg, Corel migrated to Paris, where he became a member of the Société Psychanalytique de Paris. He was active in the IPA and reviewed for the IJP as well as our Journal. He had a continuing interest in the importance of construction and validation; among his writings, Repetition and Surprise: Construction and its Validation is probably the best known. He is survived by his wife, Haydée Faimberg, their daughter Claudina Corel and her husband Laurent Mathiew, their son Eduardo
Corel and his wife Marina Ivanova Corel, and four grandchildren Aurelien, Nina, Adrian, and Maia.
Ernest Kafka, a mainstay of the board through several editorships, died of a traumatic brain injury on Thanksgiving 2022, a few days short of his 90th birthday. A Tr
