THE INNER WORLD OF JOAN RIVIERE Collected Papers: 1920-1958 edited by Athol Hughes London: Karnac Books, 1991, xiv + 376 pp., £18.95
Joan Riviere's collected papers and reviews from 1920 to 1958, with a foreword by Hanna Segal and a biographical chapter by Athol Hughes demonstrates the uniqueness of her personality and the originality of thought of one of the early British analysts. There are informative introductions to the papers and reading the papers causes one to wonder why recent analytic writing is not as good as this.

THE SEARCH FOR THE SELF, VOLUME 4 Selected Writings of Heinz Kohut: 1978-1981 edited by Paul H. Ornstein Madison, CT: International Universities Press, 1991, viii + 453 pp., $55.00
The final two volumes of Heinz Kohut's writing, edited and appreciatively introduced by Paul H. Ornstein, includes previously unpublished papers and some important letters from 1978 to 1981. “The Two Analyses of Mr. Z.” that seems to have gotten the whole thing started is included. Volumes 1 and 2 cover Kohut's work from 1950 to 1978 and the four volumes attest to the power of Kohut's thought whether or not you are a fan.
