SIGMUND FREUD Critical Assessments
Volume 1. Freud and the Origins of Psychoanalysis
Volume 2. The Theory and Practice of Psychoanalysis
Volume 3. The Psychoanalysis of Culture
Volume 4. Freud and the Impact of Psychoanalysis edited by Lawrence Spurling London: Routledge, 1989, $295.00 boxed
Lawrence Spurling has produced an extraordinary four volume collection of 100 papers (about 25 in each volume) that is a treasure trove for Freud scholars in particular but certainly for all analytic practicioners. The papers range from those that expand Freudian ideas from within and those critical and/or appreciative from outside the mainstream. T. S. Eliot's 1924 critical review of “The Future of an Illusion” and four previously privately published papers of Peter Swales are noteworthy for students of the history of psychoanalysis. The rest of the papers are primarily reprinted from journals and are wide ranging in subject matter. A chronological table of the contributions and place of previous publication is valuable as is Spurling's excellent, lengthy summary introductions to each volume and the grouping of papers by subject. Major writers represented here are Auden, Deutsch, Ellis, Erikson, Grinker, Grünbaum, Jones, Jung, Kris, Lacan, Langs, Lewin, Reiff, Riviere, Rycroft, Trilling, Spence, Sterba, and Szasz, to name only a few. Obviously a labor of love and dedication and, above all, a serious work and a valuable resource.
