At last, a sensible book about French psychoanalysis! Marion Oliner has written a fair, balanced overview of French psychoanalytic thought, in which she outlines the salient and important points about French psychoanalysis without getting lost in the literature or taken in by it. She stresses the richness of French psychoanalysis, its peculiarities, and its importance as responsible psychoanalytic work. The author knows very well that Lacan does not represent French psychoanalysis but she is aware that the soul-searching engendered by Lacan and the conflicts around him are an important element in the uniquely French version of psychoanalysis. The catalytic, even if essentially negative, theoretical role that Lacan played in the development of French psychoanalysis is well delineated.
