Fairbairn's Journey Into the Interior is an authoritative psychobiography of a psychoanalyst, Ronald Fairbairn, by John D. Sutherland, who was a pupil, friend and colleague for more than 35 years. Ronald Fairbairn was one of the founders in Great Britain of the object relations approach to psychoanalysis, which bases personality development on the experience of the infant in its early relationship within the family rather than on instinctual drives, the classical Freudian view.
Fairbairn worked in relative isolation in Edinburgh, Scotland, and his clinical and theoretical contributions were so original that he was made a member of the British Psychoanalytic Society without having undergone the full psychoanalytic training.
