Psychoanalysis & Cinema is a thoroughly stimulating book, dealing with one of the most exciting areas in current applied psychoanalytic studies. The various chapters touch on a wide range of fascinating topics, from gender identity to psychological explanation in Weimar cinema, and from cinematic depictions of motherhood to issues of cinematic identification. Moreover, a number of the chapters provide valuable reflections on historical changes in the structures explored by psychoanalysis and represented in films—an area that since Freud has been largely neglected by psychoanalysts (Kohut being a major exception), most analysts treating the psyche as something fixed and given for all time rather than realizing the many ways in which it interacts with social changes over time.
