THE OEDIPUS PAPERS edited by George H. Pollock and John Munder Ross Classics in Psychoanalysis, Monograph 6. Madison, CT: International Universities Press, 1988, xix + 532 pp., $45.00
An impressive book in which the editors collect 27 papers. Almost all are previously published yet all relate to this bedrock concept. From Freud, Ferenczi and Reik, to Ross, Pollock and Michels the subjects range from the origins of myth, the Oedipus plays, and the role of filicide, to the negative and positive oedipal and the oedipal conflicts of the analyst. For practicing analysts and students of applied psychoanalysis.
THE ANNUAL OF PSYCHOANALYSIS Volume 19 edited by The Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis Hillsdale, NJ: The Analytic Press, 1991, x + 253 pp., $32.50
Edited by the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis this decidedly Chicago based annual seems to get smaller each year. Any idea that it is “the” annual of psychoanalysis should be dispelled. Nonetheless, it is of high quality and this number features an excellent section on art and archaeology with papers on Freud's artistic sensibility, Hilda Doolittle, Egon Schiele, and Margaret Drabble. A section on developnment and another on psychoanalysis and empathy are valuable. An appreciative essay on N. Lionel Blitzten, Chicago's pioneer psychoanalyst rounds out the volume.
