To the Editor:
In reviewing the three volumes Freud: Appraisals and Reappraisals, edited by Paul E. Stepansky (Psychoanalytic Books, 1, 415-429), which contain two long essays of mine on patients of Freud featured in the Studies on Hysteria, Sydney Smith, Ph.D. proffers a diagnosis of my person that is so alarming, one is justified in wondering what a psychiatrist would have to say. Allow me then please to urge any readers of this journal seriously concerned with matters of mental health to check out, for purposes of comparison, the two glowing reviews of my essays which appeared in the American Journal of Psychiatry (144, May 1987, p. 676; 146, July 1989, pp. 936-937). I think most psychiatrists would agree there is a great deal they could say—though not very much of it about my person.
