All of his long life Freud was a great letter-writer, great in the quantitative as well as qualitative sense. Fichtner (1989) estimates that he wrote no less than 20,000 letters in a little over 70 years, about half of which have survived and a quarter have been catalogued. It is doubtful, however, that among the 1677 yet to be published there will be any substantial group from Freud's earliest years as a correspondent. Of the few we have from his student days, the present collection is surely the richest.
