CLINICAL LECTURES ON KLEIN AND BION edited by Robin Anderson New Library of Psychoanalysis, 14. London: Tavistock/Routledge, 1992, xi + 139 pp., $59.95; $15.95 paper
With a foreword by Hanna Segal and a valuable introduction by the editor, Robin Anderson, this group of nine lectures for the general public given over three days at the Institute of Psycho-Analysis in London provides a useful introduction to Klein and Bion. The authors discuss the usual Klein/Bion topics—projective identification, unconscious phantasy, paranoid-schizoid and depressive positions, splitting, and the container—in a lucid style with appropriate clinical examples. This small but densely packed book is enthusiastically recommended to those wishing both a useful introduction to and information on the current state of Kleinian thinking. A valuable companion to Melanie Klein Today (; see Psychoanalytic Books, 2, 153-169).
THE HARVARD LECTURES by Anna Freud Edited and annotated by Joseph Sandler Madison, CT: International Universities Press, 1992, ix + 142 pp., $30.00
First presented at Harvard in 1952, and edited from transcriptions by Joseph Sandler, these nine lectures were delivered seemingly without notes by Anna Freud. With an introduction by Talcott Parsons, they are still as fresh and clear an introduction to psychoanalysis today as they surely were 40 years ago and a reminder of what clear exposition can be.
