This collection of papers is both highly edifying and disheartening. Each of the contributors has interesting and informative things to say about “psychic structure,” viewed from the psychoanalytic point of view, but they also present disparate and discouraging views (and understanding) of what the concept of psychic structure entails. All the papers seem to have been presented in panel discussions of the American Psychoanalytic Association during the years 1986-1987 and to have been accepted for publication during the late fall of 1987 or early winter of 1988. The collection provided the central focus of the “topic for the 75th anniversary of the APA that would characterize the intellectual and clinical efforts of psychoanalysis during the past 25 years” (p. ix).
