This is a wide-striding, fascinating, frustrating book. It is, in fact, a collection of 12 essays written over a nine-year period, each intended for a different audience and occasion and all therefore quite diverse in their scope and penetration. This diversity becomes an asset in the context of Image and Insight, where the author's overarching theme is the inherent “dialogue” between the arts and psychoanalysis, multifaceted and multidetermined. Spitz's familiarity with the literature of psychoanalysis is impressive, as is her erudition in the various fields of fine, literary, and contemporary arts. Her intelligence, sensitivity, and curiosity invite the reader's participation and involvement, her questions are seldom trivial, and her conclusions are sometimes revelatory.
