MORE THAN A CIGAR by Evan J. Elkin Cigar Aficionado, Vol. 3, No. 2, 1994/95, pp. 124-134
A serious article about Freud as a cigar smoker; richly illustrated with photographs of Freud—all with a cigar in hand. A nice piece of Freudiana that non-cigar smokers may still read with profit.
BRUNO BETTELHEIM'S CONTRIBUTION TO PSYCHOANALYSIS Special Issue edited by Paul Marcus and Alan Rosenberg Psychoanalytic Review, Vol. 81, No. 3, Fall 1994
A collection of eight appreciative essays on the psychoanalytic contributions of Bruno Bettelheim helps to positively reevaluate the work of an original thinker. Of particular note is Johanna Krout Tabin's paper discussing Bettelheim's criticism of the Strachey translations and Elio J. Frattaroli's on Bettelheim's unrecognized contributions to psychoanalysis.
THE ANNUAL OF PSYCHOANALYSIS Volume 21 edited by Jerome A. Winer for the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis Hillsdale, NJ: The Analytic Press, 1993, viii + 325 pp., $36.00
This is unquestionably one of the best issues of the Annual. There is a long paper by Helmut Thomä on training analysis and psychoanalytic education, several interesting papers on hysteria, and a valuable paper by Frank Summers on object relations. This series and so many edited volumes and festschrift present similar problems: unless they are devoted to a particular subject they are really journals in hard bound editions. Thus, though this volume has four papers on hysteria the other papers are really unconnected highlighting the problem of all publications such as this.
